Compost bin.

I dug over my compost bin and started another one next to it,it's took over a year and a half to get to this level. It's working quite good and composting down, so I've covered it to let it do it's business. We have started to make some liquid fertiliser well some comfrey,we had a bit growing behind the shed so we thought we would put to good use. I've took up some rhubarb so I can make a little crumble, only me that eats it so will have to freeze some of it. My pea onwards are starting to pop through so look forward eating them later on in the season.

Bath been filled and no leaks.

We have filled the bath up with water and left it over night to see if we had any leaks, all ok at the moment so the tub is full of water now. I've put some bricks and half a slab and some wood in the tub, just incase anything falls in at least they is something for them to climb onto to get out ( hope it works). Now I need to sort some plants out to put in the tub and do something for around the tub. I should of double checked the tub before i filled it because it's not straight, I know it doesn't if it's straight or not, it's for the wildlife to use and not me.

Sorting pond out.

I made another start on the pond while Keith was painting the greenhouse and sorting the pavers out, I've managed to dig a hole and get the bath in the best I can. The ground is a little uneven so will have to try and level it a little, I might of been easier to put a pond liner down instead of a bath. Will have to see how this works and alter it later if I want a bigger pond,my pond is a little smaller then Keith's pond but may change over time.

Greenhouse nearly finished.

The greenhouse is nearly finished we have just to seal the top of the roof up,Keith has finished putting the guttering up we just have to connect some down pipes to catch the water. On the roof I've put some silicone on as an upside down Y, because when it rains the water runs down the roof and hits the brackets and drops onto the frame. This way I hope it will divert the water into the guttering I hope,so fingers crossed it will do the job.

Making a pond.

Going to try and make a water feature on the allotment with a bath I have been given, it won't be like Keith's pond but it's my little bit for wildlife. I've weeded a little bit of the plot and just have to dig a hole for the bath to fit in.

Day 375 on the greenhouse extension

We have nearly finished the greenhouse extension on our little plot, all we have to do is to tape the joints up and 1 section of the guttering then it's done. We trimmed the roof section down because it overlapped a little so we could fit some guttering, saying that the guttering I found was some pipe that was dumped outside which was some left over gas pipe.I cut the pipe in half so I could use it on both sides, while I was cutting it Keith was sorting some brackets out to fix it to the greenhouse. Once we fitted it through the brackets that Keith made it worked and we started to catch water,I think keith wanted a Blue Peters badge for the work he had done on the guttering.

Some movement in the pots

Checked on the seeds in the greenhouse and we have some movements, some tomatoes / broccoli / red cabbage have popped out to say hello. Was getting a bit upset that nothing was growing, this time last year I had a lot more growing. Some of the cabbages and turnips have picked up a little outside under the bottles,I have left a row of each without cover to see if they survive. I have sowed some more cabbage and turnips just incase I have a problem with them.

Not a lot done.

Not done a lot at the allotment this week due to being busy at work, also it's been raining most of the week so a little wet under foot. The cabbages and turnips i planted last week don't look well at all, so I've put some bottles over them like I did last year to create mini greenhouses. Hopefully some of them may pick up and survive if they don't I've re-sowed some more, also sowed some more seeds which are 28 Cabbage Primo, 28 red drumhead, 28 swede ,28 savoy best of all,28 purple to turnips,28 sprouts, and 10 beef tomatoes, let's hope these grow because not much else is growing.

This time last year i had quite a lot growing and planted so what a difference a year makes, well I guess that's gardening for you. Going to try and do some more on the greenhouse this weekend if the weather ok,saying that it needs to be finished so will have to do something on it and get it finished.

Planted out a little.

I planted out some of the seeds that had grown a little big in the greenhouse,I may of been a little early but had do something couldn't stunt the growth. I think i have planted out nearly a month earlier than last year, the warm weather didn't help much so i planted out and put under cover. Will keep an eye in them just incase they don't make it, fingers crossed but if all fails then I will sow some more.

So I managed to plant out 38 Cabbage Primo, 40 Purple top Turnips, also sowed some Pea Onwards well 163 of them, also put in another row of Early Nantes carrots in.

Feel like a weekend gardener

I have only been to the allotment a couple of times this week due to been busy at work and the weather, at the beginning of last week it was sunshine and the soil was to dry to plant anything. This week we have had rain and hailstone all of the week and a little sunshine, not complaining about the rain because we do need it, only problem we cant get onto the soil because it sticks to your boots.
On the times I have been at the allotment it has rained so only did a little I put up a temporary drainage on the greenhouse to catch the water coming of it, also I filled in a little more in on the greenhouse windows so now we just have to sort a little section on the roof and door. We are going to trim the panel on the roof which a little big once we find some guttering to catch the water, at the moment when it rains it goes straight onto soil without falling on the greenhouse frame and soaking the frame.
I have took home a cauliflower which is a nice size for us to eat, the other ones I gave away so my turn to try one.

So what I have sowed are as follows, Sweet peppers spanish mixed 12 seeds, beetroot Detroit globe 24!seeds, broccoli romanesco 24 seeds, cucumber burpless 12 seeds, spring onions one full row, carrots one full row, calendula orange king just in pots to bring home.

Got a little done

Spent a few hours at the allotment today and got a little bit done, well more than some days anyway. I put in 2 rows of main crop potatoes which are Desiree, well I only got one bag so i divided it up between the 2 rows and got 9 spuds in each. I also planted 20 king Edwards potatoes in one row, i got them giving so going to give them a go.

I put in some sugar snap peas in a full row, last year it was only half a row I managed to plant 145 seeds in a full two rows. Last year the peas didn't make it home I ate most of them at the allotment,I've put them 3inches apart but won't last long. Got my last seeded onions in well 2 rows extra,so now I have a total of 12 rows of turbo onions.

We also had another go at sorting the extension out on the greenhouse, we put up most of the roof we just have to add a couple of sections and tape the joints up then that's sorted. Just have to put a door on and sort the weeds out inside of it.

Keiths lunch

Quick post while having a cuppa at the allotment,I've just noticed keith has his own lunchbox with his name on it. Don't know if his shirt and trousers have his name on the tags, just incase he looses them while playing out. So sweet.

Bed for Raspberries

A few weeks ago I put some leafs around the bed of raspberries, but changed it yesterday to some free wood Chipping's. It does look better so hopefully stop the weeds and help keep the water in the soil, the used leafs i put on the strawberry bed.

Planted some onion sets.

I planted some of the onion sets i had growing in the greenhouse in trays, I was hoping the soil would of broke up a little more than it was with the rain we had. But it was still quite hard and lumpy so will have to break it up as I plant thing as I go along, so I managed to plant some onion sets in. I planted 5 rows with 27 onions in each row, then did another 5 rows with 20 onions in each row. I still have some sets left but also plenty of onion seeds to plant,so I don't think I will run out of onions again this year. Still using last years onion .
