Keeps harvesting

It's the time of year when you can keep harvesting all that lovely veg,but the downside the plot starts to look empty. The greenhouse is still producing plenty of toms/cucumbers/peppers/chilli's,the peppers and cucumbers + toms get eaten straight away but chilli's get frozen. The better half doesn't like chilli's so I freeze them and use in stir fry's and curries, but I don't tell the better half that I've slip the chilli's in the meals.

I've still got two rows of 2nd early's to dig up and that leaves me 4 main crop, still have plenty off swede/marrows/sweetcorn/beetroot pick up and the odd give away.

More beans

Thats another row full of beans picked and have just have one row left to do,I've saved a few beans for seeds for next year to grow. I've never saved any seeds from anything I've grown before,on the other row I have a few more to pick but most of them have turned black so more seeds to use and give away.

Onions

I pulled up some onions at the beginning of the week, only because most of them had fallen over. I laid them out to dry before I store them or eat them, most likely eat them before I store them. Then I decided to go and weed the onion section and pull up even more,I've weeded half of the area and left onions to dry out. Only hoping the onions are still laying on the ground when i go back and no one has jumped fence and pinched them, once dry I will store in the shed at home instead on the allotment.

First squash and funny beets.

Whilst doing a bit of watering I noticed my first squash of the year, don't know if it will get any bigger. I've only planted them in large pots and feed them 2/3 times a week,if I do them next year I will plant them outside or plant in the boarders within the greenhouse. Some of my beetroot don't look very well, only one sort has started to lose its shape a little.

Hello strangers

Hello one and all hope you are doing well,it's been nearly two weeks since my last post and I'm sorry. I've just been a bit busy at work and trying to find time to blog and dig,I've been a few times to the plot to do a bit of this and that but not a lot. This week I'm on holiday and I'm trying to get down and do as much as I can,but only been a couple of times and seem to be getting on with it slowly. So fingers crossed I can catch up with it all, then get back to reading everyone's blogs and more time on the plot.

Weeding

A couple if parts of the plot I keep weeding then do nothing then the weeds grow back,so I decided to weed the sections again and then dig it over. The sections I dug over was quite hard to dig I tried to use a spade but couldn't do it,so I ended up just using fork to do it all. The first part took me a few hours on Thursday and Friday to dig over, the second was weeded saturday and dug over today (Sunday). I also cleared a section near the gate which was a dumping ground,I'm going to cover the soil with some sheeting then put some gravel down.

Quick harvest

Another quick harvest to top up the fridge at home before I fill it with beer, cucumbers are doing ok but will run out of them soon. I took home some peppers one if them was quite plain but the other wasn't. The peppers I haven't tried was Hungarian wax ones though they was a mild pepper but I was wrong,it was a strong one but gets stronger as it gets bigger. The beetroot i took home wasn't to eat but drink, I just made it into beetroot wine don't know what it's like.

I've started to drink some of the red wine I made the other week,it was ok so I started to make some more. I've also made some ribena wine going to make some strawberry ribena wine next, already have a few going on at the moment.

Rhubarb
Pineapple
Red
Strawberry & orange
Orange

I also bought some spare demijohns and stored them in the shed out if the way.

Another good harvest.

Another good harvest this weekend but only for a few hours, some of it has been eaten but the rest was frozen. Had another great batch of broad beans so the freezer is full now, still have plenty to pick over the next few weeks.

Only got a few more turnips to pick but have plenty if swedes to pick, will do more next year to keep us going. I don't  blanch them I just cut them up and freeze them, when I use them it tends to have a lot of water in them. But the wife and daughter only eat turnips and swedes mashed up,so the water isn't a problem.

I've just picked my last spring onions till the others grow a little fatter,I will grow them the same way as I have done this year. All I've done is grow them in plastic tubs filled with compost, so easy  to grow in tubs better than planting in the soil on my plot.

I've had a hit and miss on the carrots some of them are ok and other no so good,my soil not good enough at the moment to grow carrots in.

Another cucumber picked and also picked some onions that didn't look any good, well some of them had fallen over and started to die back. So I picked them and tried to dry out in the shed ,well my attempt to hang then up.

Moving bits around.

With me being a tad busy at work and not feeling well so I've been restricted to going to the plot, when I did get chance I didn't do much but did a little. I did notice the plants in the greenhouse was suffering a little,so I've trimmed a few plants back to give more light and circulation. We watered everything most nights but some plants still suffered,so had a look at the pots and soil and found the soils was rock hard and the water just didn't reach the roots. So i adjusted all the pots and soil and now everything seems to be growing better,so will have to keep and eye on things a little better.

In other news I picked a few things up while sorting the greenhouse out,but need to start to take things more often. I've given a few things away well cucumbers anyway I have plenty of them.

My gherkins have started to fill up quite a lot think I need to start to pickle them,I also got given some round courgettes again and I made some more soup.

I dug up some more spuds well two plants anyway and was happy in what I got, must of been around 20 spuds out of 2 tubers planted. Think next year I'm just going to plant 2nds and main crop or just main crop. If I just plant main crop and I want some spuds I will just dig up some early.

I picked some Tomato's up out of the greenhouse but not many, I have a feeling it's going to be a rubbish year for toms for me. I picked another batch of strawberries up but not enough to make jam, maybe next year for jam with all the runners I have.

Overall I'm happy in what been growing and what I've been taking home, just have to harvest a little more every time i go. I will have to crack on with the weeding again, was doing ok but with me being busy at work and the rain the weeds are winning.
