Not been this week

Not been to the plot this week been a tad busy at work, also got man flu so that hasn't helped. Well I popped down to take some compost straight from work, that's it I'm hoping to get down on Friday and Saturday if all goes well. Think I'll get some seeds sorted while sitting in the warm greenhouse I hope,I'll put radio on and  I will be in my own little world.

In other news I made some more wine at the weekend, well I bottled it up and got 6 bottles. Think I started it in January and the rhubarb was from the plot last year,I've got more growing thing year and I've sown some new seeds for the first time. I took a reading and the wine came out about 10% which isn't bad, will do some more this year but will add more fruit to it.

Own compost

I sieved some of my own compost that's been rotting in the corner, then put some of it in 3 tubs for some carrots. The carrots can be grown in pots and planters so it says on the packet,I will also put some straight into the soil later on in the year. Last year I tried some spring onions in pots, some of them did work it's just me over crowding them with to many seeds.

Had a chuckle

Went to the plot today and didn't do much lost interest today, but I did sow some seeds well flower seeds. Some of the seeds were old packets so just using them up,I opened a new packet of seeds and it was empty. It must be the new type of seeds the invisible ones,I do hope these grow into big invisible plants .

Tidy up

While down on the plot on Sunday I gave the area between the Polytunnel and greenhouse a tidy,I've moved (dumped) all the rubbish and chicken wire to the other side of the greenhouse. I weeded the strawberry bed and sorted the gravel near the pond, put some fresh bark down along the edge just to tart it up. It does look a lot better just hope I can keep it that way.

Quick tidy and spuds

I did a quick tidy up around the pond and it looks a bit better now, just need to put a fence around it so no one will fall in (ME).  It's either a fence or a gate near the poly tunnel to stop people coming down, enter at own risk will be put on the gate if I build one.

I planted two rows of spuds well my first early's Rocket,I'm not keen on digging spuds in could do with a large dibber to make hole and plonk spud in. I know the spud sections gets dug over well, when you plant them and when you take them out. I did my first row and the soils came out ok,but the second row was a nightmare so hard and damp. I'd thought I'd dug it over a while back but I must of missed this section out,it's full of lumps and some of it did break down but a lot stayed lumpy and full of clay. I will keep breaking it up as I go along so should be ok, it's toooooo wet underneath and toooooo dry on top.

Started on my onions

Only thing I've got going at the moment is my onion sets,I've started them all in modular trays before planting. Up to now I have 131 Sturon onions and 203 Stuttgarter and that's more than last year,I've still got my turbo onions to sow yet. I think I may have about 200 more onions to sort,it didn't look that many when I bought them so that's a lot to plant out later. Think I did 16 rows of onions last year so looks like I need a few more rows,so I tried 2 types last year and 3 this year fingers crossed we have a good year for onions.

Pond update

Hi all just a quick update on the pond so far,we've filled it with water and put gravel and slabs / stones around the sides. I will need more stones to finish the pond off,but using paving slabs as a temp cover. Once I've got around to getting some flowers for around the pond,I will move the gravel and make a hole in membrane and plant the flowers. I will be getting some pond plants once I've got sorted and know what I want,at least it's looking tidy for the moment.

Most time I've spent

It's the most time I've spent at the allotment for ages,I managed to do 2 days well 2 half days. With the 2 days I was quite chuffed I got a bit done, well it's more than I do on a normal weekend. I've planted 2 rows of broad beans and a row of each sugar snap pea and pea onward,I did plant them straight In the soil and quite deep ish. I did dig the soil over last year and  just raked it this year, some of it did break up but still have some quite a few lumps. What hasn't help is that we have not had any frost this year or even a winter, the frost does break the soil up but up to now I had to do it by hand.

Onions and spuds

Well that's most of the spuds laid out just got my stored onions to sort out,I did say last year I wasn't going to buy 1st and 2nd spuds but I did. Last year I did two types of onions and I nearly planted about 300,this year I've bought 3 types so I will have more than 300 this year it will be like an onion farm.
